Model Shoot Testing Elinchrom Quadras

I am a great fan of using flash outdoors whether it be speedlites or more powerful studio style location lighting.

So when Brian from The Flash Centre in Birmingham kindly offered to loan me an Elinchrom Quadra kit, I jumped at the chance.

Also a few days before I took delivery of a shiny new Canon 5dMK11 so this shoot was really going to be a learning curve as I wanted to try out the 5dmk11 video as well to shoot along side the stills. There is a short video/slide show at the end with just a couple of clips we shot.

I already own the Elinchron Ranger AS Speed kit which is amazing for using on location and with its 1100 ws of power I can use light modifiers including wafer soft boxes for studio quality lighting outdoors.

The Quadra kit is very similiar but is 400 ws and much smaller and more portable.

The kit comes with 2 heads.

For the majority of these shots we used just the one head which enabled us to use the full 400ws of power through one head if needed.

On some of the shots we used both heads which splits the power roughly to 67% on one head and 33% on the second. This is ideal for using one head as a main light and the second as a fill or hair or kicker light.

This first shot was the only shot we took using a light modifier, which was an elinchrom 44cm square honeycomb reflector i got from e bay the morning of the shoot.

One Quadra bare head to the left of the camera.

Shot below one quadra bare head to the right of the camera with shutter speed increased to reduce the ambient light.

The shots below in the coloured dress again just one head to the right of the camera.

For this shot I used the Orbis Ringflash and then both quadra heads one either side and to the rear of the model to give a kick to the hair.

Shot below both heads, the more powerful one to the right as the main light and the second to the left and out of shot of the camera used as a kicker.

The rest of the shots were taken using just one head.

On the way home we stopped at a local windfarm and took a few shots, we had to be quick due to some signs saying we shouldnt really be there, really? What signs?

These flash heads are very light and portable and would be ideal at say a wedding for that "WOW" shot after the speeches.

Using the head without any modifiers eg, soft boxes etc they are a great kit, although in my opinion if you want to use larger studio modifiers and still over power the sun on a summers day the Ranger AS speed is the way to go. But there is the trade off as the Ranger Speed kit is a lot heavier to carry around than the very light and portable Quadras.

If you would like more information on the Quadra here call Brian at The Flash Centre on 0121 327 9220 or visit the Flash Centre website here

Here is a slide show of the some of the shots we took on the day with just a little bit of video from the 5dmk11

Shannon and Sharni Prom Fashion Shoot

Its Prom season and on Sunday morning I had the pleasure of photographing sisters Shannon and Sharni in their prom dresses and what a pair of stunners they were.

The girls had great fun being models for a few hours around a local beauty spot.

The weather was very warm but extremely windy which worked to our advantage in some shots and in others we sheltered in the calm of the trees.

Here is a very small selection from over 150 finished images the girls had to choose from.

If you would like a Location Fashion Prom Dress shoot before you pack away your dress call us as soon as possible.

We only have a limited number of available slots.

Also if you have been lucky enough to have purchased your Prom dress from Camellia Bridal in Northampton you are entitled to a FREE Location shoot with us.

Call the studio on 01604 416005.
